Benefits of Bellydance

The beautiful art of Bellydance can be learned at any age.  Bellydance is both a relaxing and invigorating dance that can shape, tone and improve body poise and confidence.  The health benefits of Bellydance include improved fitness, circulation, suppleness and the correction of the body's postural alignment.

On an emotional and spiritual level, many women feel they regain their self esteem, reconnecting with their "feminine self" thereby becoming more comfortable with their bodies through Bellydance.  They begin to see and relate to their bodies differently; those who were previously weight-conscious begin to relax, becoming more accepting of their bellies and hips and in fact begin to appreciate and embrace their beautifully ample curves.

The basis of the core moves in Bellydance is always center, just below the navel or in esoteric arts, the place known as the "Hara", "second Chakra" or simply "the center".  Yoga and Pilate's are two other popular exercises that also focus their energies on "the center" as well as the breath, two very important factors in building "core abdominal strength" which aids in revitalizing the internal organs and improves both posture and balance all of which are key to dance and "dance posture".

Physical fitness and stamina will also greatly improve with regular Bellydance classes and practice.  Bellydance will help firm and tone the muscles, especially the abdominal, arms, upper back, hips, thighs and glutes  (I'm sure you've heard the term "buns of steel" many times over).  Adding regular cardiovascular exercise is also very important for professional dancing success, it will aid in building your overall endurance well beyond the amount of endurance needed for regular dance performances.

The fluidity of movement necessary for Bellydancing can help relax and lubricate the joints and can be helpful in some cases of arthritis, particularly in the wrists and shoulders.  Many who have suffered uncomfortable back, neck and shoulder stiffness have reported marked improvement after continual Bellydancing.  Fluidity of movement can further be enhanced by adding Yoga or stretching practices to your daily or weekly routine.
